Welcome to the Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley!

Here’s a message from President Tzviatko:

Greetings Rotarians and Guests,Happy Halloween week everyone! Please let us know what (if anything) you're doing for Halloween and post some pictures in the comments section at the bottom of this page. This week we'll hear from our very own Sandy Stabile about her recent trip to Myanmar and the work being done by RotaPlast and Operation Smiles to provide cleft palate repair surgeries.

Sincerely,

Tzviatko

President, Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley

Guests, we are happy to have you join us this week!

As we see it, our flexibility as an online, asynchronous club allows a special type of service to Rotarians around the world: we make it easier for anyone to strive for and maintain 100% attendance. That keeps you engaged with Rotary's events and ideas, and provides a moment of inspiration for devoting your creativity, talents, and resources to good causes. You are certainly not required to pay anything in order to attend our meetings. However, if you would like to make a small contribution to our service efforts, you are welcome to do so in our secure Happy Dollars section down the page. This could be what you normally pay at your own club's meetings for lunch, for example. Any amount is welcome, but first and foremost, we're happy you've joined us, and hope you will share with others who we are and what we do to help inspire Service Above Self. And don't forget to fill out our attendance form so you get an email you can pass on to your club's secretary!

Congratulations to our member Alexandra Heller and her husband on the birth of their son Mark Albert Heller!

Weekly Funny with the Lady of Laughter (LOL)

We believe laughter is an important part of life, and we should all make time to laugh a little. This segment of our meeting is meant to tickle you just enough. These funnies are curated by member Yvonne Kwan, our “Lady of Laughter!”

Happy Hallo-week! Hopefully these jokes don't spook you out too much!

Why don't mummies have any friends?Because they're all wrapped up in themselves!

What is a goblin's favorite cheese?Monster-ella!

Why are vampires so easy to fool?Because they're suckers!

Weekly Inspiration

Every week we start our meetings with a short video highlighting innovation, inspiration, entrepreneurship, or social change.

Travel can be so rewarding. It’s the ultimate way to learn about different cultures and meet new people. How can you make sure you get the most out of your next trip? Pico Iyer, who has been writing about travel since 1986, has lots of great advice to share.Join the thoughtful globetrotter in Singapore to learn why the best way to get around many destinations is on foot, the benefits of being an observant traveler and the value of reflection.

Member  Spotlight

This week's Member Spotlight is Mark Busani!  Here is what he has been up to lately:

My name is Mark and I live in the beautiful city of Perth in Western Australia.A really big thing that has happened to me recently is that I have a house built on my property (5 acres) that I could actually move into. I had been living in a shed/caravan on my property for the last 5 years. The house is built out of rammed earth. An unusual building material in these parts, but has great thermal and sound qualities. I also love the finished look. The house is totally off-grid. I have a stand-alone power supply. Quite a lot of solar panels on the house and shed as well as 23.6 kW battery backup.I use rain water as my main water source (I have 2 tanks for a total of 120 000 litres). I also have a commercial bore to water fruit trees on the property and I am not connected to mains water.I am also not connected to any main sewerage systems and have an ATU (Aerobic Treatment Unit) that produces grey water. This gets pumped back onto a 150 square metre garden bed.Below is the garden bed. I still need to plant trees and shrubs and will be using Australian native plantsAnd I have to share a photo of my dog Bluey (his breed is a blue heeler). He is 10 months old and full of energy. Definitely keeps me on my toes and a great companion. It feels like I live a double life as I am a Digital Analyst for a bank in the city. So I work in the city in a corporate setting during the week and then come home to my rural oasis. Though I still have a lot of work to do on the property it is very peaceful and a great distraction to my full time working life.

Movember fundraising

Are you interested in growing a mustache for the month of November? The  fundraising committee is looking to host a Movember fundraising effort where we find volunteers from our club willing to grow a mustache for the month and then create a financial pledge to the Rotary Foundation for their efforts. If you'd like to donate to the effort to do so via the Happy Dollars spot.

Hello members! Are you interested in growing a mustache for the month of November? The fundraising committee is looking to host a Movember fundraising effort where we find volunteers from our club willing to grow a mustache for the month and then create a financial pledge to the Rotary Foundation for their efforts.Movember is starting in a few days.  You may be asking, what's Movember?  Movember is a month long mustache growing effort in support of men's health that takes place in the month of November.Any mustache style is welcome and fake mustache cutouts are totally permitted!   Send us pictures of your progress each week so that we can ooh and ahh over the amazing mustaches our club can create!   And for those who wish to support the mustache growers, consider a donation to TRF.    Many thanks, the Fundraising Committee.Ps: please send your pictures to the club's Slack or Facebook pages and we'll collect them each week and post a collage of our works-in-progress!

Open and Reopen Tabs

This month's Tech Tidbit is about saving one's posterior the half-second after you close a browser tab you hadn't meant to close. Here to help, we are!

Coffee With a Rotarian

A natural part of Rotary is the networking and the fellowship you get out of meeting other Rotarians. Coffee With a Rotarian is a monthly program of our club where we match participating club members for one-on-one virtual (or in some cases in person) coffee meetings, so they can learn more about each other. This program is organized by member Tzviatko Chiderov.

This week we have Ferheen from Santa Clara, CA, USA  reporting on a chat with Suzanne from Napa, CA, USAI had the pleasure of having a coffee with Suzanne a few days ago and we had a ton of fun. Did you know Suzanne is a fixer??? Companies call her to help them fix their problems. She was the Olivia Pope (Scandal reference, greatest show ever) for Kaiser. I attribute all of Kaiser Permanente's current success to Suzanne!!!! We also discussed how we got involved with Rotary. She told me all about her old club in Napa :) Thank you for such a wonderful time, Suzanne!!We encourage all club members to participate in Coffee With a Rotarian. You can sign up here!

Happy Dollars: Do Good by Sharing Something Good

Each week we ask our members to share stories with the club and toss in a few dollars to support our efforts. The primary goal of this section is to provide a fun way of getting to know each fellow members and guests, while giving back to a good cause.

Happy dollars is an opportunity to share something positive that has happened in your life whether it is personal or business. Think of it as your opportunity to brag a little, but also put a little bit into a karma jar. The money donated through happy dollars is put to charitable use, and the message that you leave for happy dollars will be posted in our online meeting the following week for the entire week for folks to see! (Pending that it’s appropriate!)

Thanks for a great presentation and perspective on the job of teaching, Mari! Our students are the greatest resource and it makes me feel good to know that there are dedicated people like you involved in teaching. Good luck to fellow book drawing contestants!

Another great program this week.

Thanks Mari for sharing with us. Really inspiring and great to share stories that I know will really motivate and energise people. As already mentioned this can be used across so many different disciplines. Agree with Rushton that the prosthetic hands stories is a great reminder of the fantastic work that Rotary does.

Thanks Keith for another amazing photo and Shags cooking/eating tips. Also enjoyed the jokes Yvonne. Keep them coming.

Tzviatko always great to catch up with family. Love the photos. Found the vinegar video very interesting. Always learning something new.
