Welcome to the Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley!

Here’s a message from President Tzviatko:

Greetings Rotarians and Guests,It's World Polio Day on October 24th! It's amazing to think about the progress we've made over the years in nearly eliminating this disease, and the role of Rotary in this effort. I encourage you to consider donating, as much or as little as you can afford, so collectively we can soon finish the job.Looking forward to the program by Mari Venturino this week who will tell us about the important work of educators and every day stories from this challenging and rewarding profession.Have a great week everyone!

Sincerely,

Tzviatko

President, Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley

Guests, we are happy to have you join us this week!

As we see it, our flexibility as an online, asynchronous club allows a special type of service to Rotarians around the world: we make it easier for anyone to strive for and maintain 100% attendance. That keeps you engaged with Rotary's events and ideas, and provides a moment of inspiration for devoting your creativity, talents, and resources to good causes. You are certainly not required to pay anything in order to attend our meetings. However, if you would like to make a small contribution to our service efforts, you are welcome to do so in our secure Happy Dollars section down the page. This could be what you normally pay at your own club's meetings for lunch, for example. Any amount is welcome, but first and foremost, we're happy you've joined us, and hope you will share with others who we are and what we do to help inspire Service Above Self. And don't forget to fill out our attendance form so you get an email you can pass on to your club's secretary!

Weekly Funny with the Lady of Laughter (LOL)

We believe laughter is an important part of life, and we should all make time to laugh a little. This segment of our meeting is meant to tickle you just enough. These funnies are curated by member Yvonne Kwan, our “Lady of Laughter!”

If you're in the mood for some sweet jokes, we've got some berry fruity ones for you this week!

Did you hear the joke about the banana? It wasn't very a-peel-ing!

What are twins' favorite fruit?Pears!

Why did the orange stop halfway across the road?Because it ran out of juice!

Weekly Inspiration

Every week we start our meetings with a short video highlighting innovation, inspiration, entrepreneurship, or social change.

Tadaaki Kuramato is a brewmaster. But he doesn’t brew beer—Kuramato cultivates a special black vinegar called kurozu at the Sakamoto Kurozu brewery in Japan. It’s made with rice malt, steamed rice and groundwater. And like a fine wine, this fine vinegar is aged. It’s Kuramato’s job to carefully look after 52,000 clay vases full of fermenting kurozu, all aspiring to perfection. The longer the vinegar ferments, the darker it becomes, and the smoother it tastes. It’s also known to have health benefits.

Member  Spotlight

This week's Member Spotlight is Tzviatko Chiderov!  Here is what he has been up to lately:

We are staying with my brother and sister-in-law, and It's been so fun hanging out with my nieces every day.I have a new appreciation for parents haha it's so rewarding but also absolutely exhausting being with kids all day. Never a shortage of fun moments with these two little girls though :)

World Polio Day on October 24th

The fundraising committee would like to do something to mark World Polio Day on Oct 24th. If you'd like to donate to the effort to do so via the Happy Dollars spot.

Hi eclub members and guests! This week's meeting takes place during Rotary's annual End Polio Day on October 24th.  This year Rotary and the Gates Foundation are offering a 3x match on any funds donated to Polio.  So a $25 donation becomes as $75 impact. If you'd like to contribute to this effort in support of World Polio Day, please just the Happy Dollars section of this week's meeting page and please indicate "End Polio" in the memo.   Thanks so much for supporting Rotary's efforts to eradicate Polio.  We are so close to making Polio a thing of the past through the generous contributions of members like you and the incredible efforts of health workers around the world.   Thank you!

Through a Rotarian's Lens

Sometimes a photo can capture an amazing moment. In this section Member Keith Marsh shares his incredible photography! If you'd like to submit a photo for this section please contact Keith.

The House on Fire ruins are located in southeast Utah in Mule Canyon. The rock formation overhanging the small ruin appears to be flames, but is actually just the textured sandstone rock that is reflecting light from the canyon walls opposite the ruins. It is an unrestored Anasazi ruin from 750-1300AD.

Learn Something New

This section is curated by members Shags Shagrin and Rushton Hurley and aims to teach our members and guests something new, fun and useful! If you have any ideas on a fun trick or skill you'd like to share please contact Rushton or Shags.

Ring...Ring...Chicken Wing!!

Shags here -- I'm a wing lover, and if you are too, are you like Daniel (and me), leaving just the bone behind? Or do you leave things that I can pick off for my dog, Truffle? Here's a video on the right way to leave a chicken wing for the compost bin. BTW, my new fave way of cooking them is in a hot air fryer, which lets the fat drip out and leaves them crispy outside, soft & juicy inside!https://www.seriouseats.com/2018/05/the-real-way-to-eat-chicken-wings.html

Coffee With a Rotarian

A natural part of Rotary is the networking and the fellowship you get out of meeting other Rotarians. Coffee With a Rotarian is a monthly program of our club where we match participating club members for one-on-one virtual (or in some cases in person) coffee meetings, so they can learn more about each other. This program is organized by member Tzviatko Chiderov.

This week we have Nick from Vancouver, BC, Canada  reporting on a chat with Maxi from Mountain View, CA, USAMaxi and I had our CWR after a few times we had to reschedule. I got a chance to give the history of how I ended up in Vancouver through my work and how technology shapes my day-to-day due to work and my interests. It was great to hear the story of how Maxi started in Rotary with Interact, continued through Rotaract and now is Rotary member with us at ReCSV.In addition, we discussed both our jobs. In the role of client services I touch many technologies, so we talked about innovation and how we need to continue to innovate. Maxi works at Google on Gmail and that was fascinating as well. I appreciated hearing the challenges and rewards he faces, especially being busy with work and taking classes at Stanford.

We encourage all club members to participate in Coffee With a Rotarian. You can sign up here!

Happy Dollars: Do Good by Sharing Something Good

Each week we ask our members to share stories with the club and toss in a few dollars to support our efforts. The primary goal of this section is to provide a fun way of getting to know each fellow members and guests, while giving back to a good cause.

Happy dollars is an opportunity to share something positive that has happened in your life whether it is personal or business. Think of it as your opportunity to brag a little, but also put a little bit into a karma jar. The money donated through happy dollars is put to charitable use, and the message that you leave for happy dollars will be posted in our online meeting the following week for the entire week for folks to see! (Pending that it’s appropriate!)

Here are the happy dollars contributions from last week! This section is usually updated on the early hours of Saturday, so contributions made over the weekend may not be listed here.

I did not know that rose water originated in Iran. Very interesting! Thanks Pamela for the presentation. I loved the idea of providing service in different ways and yoga seems like a natural way to reach people. Also, the chicken wing guy is intense. When I next eat chicken wings, I will certainly be thinking about doing it "right"!

Heather Shaw said:Pamela. Thanks for sharing about your organization. I have done yoga but had not considered all the various communities you can help with this practice from MS to Vets and abuse survivors. Great work!

Suzanne Van Stralen said:
