Here's a message from Immediate Past President Mitty:

Hello World!

I'm back! Past President Mitty here. It's exhilarating to be writing one of these just a few months after my term as club president ended. President Stephen has been gracious enough to allow me to share my message with you all this week and preside over the week's meeting. And I'm excited because it's TURKEY WEEK here in the states!

396 years ago, people from two different geographic origins came to break bread at an autumn harvest feast, acknowledged by many people as the first Thanksgiving celebration. This week, many of us will be breaking bread with our families, our friends, and our loved ones. Whether or not you celebrate Thanksgiving this week, another week, or not at all, this week is a time to be thankful and to share what we have with others.

With that, I would like to present this week's challenge. (A true test of if you skip the opening remarks for the meeting or not!) Please spend a minute and reflect on what you are thankful for, and share your thoughts with us in the comments section. You can share it with words, with photos, with video, or with a combination of all of the above. Bonus points if you share with us a photo of you sharing a meal with someone (or many people) who matter to you.

I am grateful for all that I have, which includes this club and its members. I'm especially happy that we are able to share this Thanksgiving with our newest members, [redacted by request] from the Silicon Valley! (Psst... new member induction this week!)

Sincerely,

Mitty Chang,

 Immediate Past President

Weekly Funny with the Lady of Laughter (LOL)

We believe laughter is an important part of life, and we should all make time to laugh a little. This segment of our meeting is meant to tickle you just enough. These funnies are curated by member Yvonne Kwan, our "Lady of Laughter!"

yvonnebubble.png

From our club's Lady of Laughter, Yvonne Kwan:

"With Thanksgiving coming this week for the U.S. members, here are some jokes that hopefully won't put you into too fowl of a mood."

Which side of a turkey has the most feathers? The outside.

What sound does a space turkey make?Hubble, Hubble, Hubble!

Who's not hungry at Thanksgiving? The turkey -- because he's already stuffed!

Weekly Inspiration: Meet Tokyo's Robot Queen!

Every week we start our meetings with a short video highlighting innovation, inspiration, entrepreneurship, or social change. This week we are featuring a video from Great Big Story about how one entrepreneur merged robots, food, and entertainment together in Tokyo.

In five short years, Tokyo’s Robot Restaurant has become the stuff of legend. In short, it’s a restaurant where guests are treated to a wild show involving oversized radio-controlled animatronics, dancers, a rock band and more flashing lights and colors than you can imagine. Owner Namie Osawa was working in the clothing industry and wanted to start a new endeavor that would utilize the talents of her out-of-work dancer friends. She conceived of Robot Restaurant as a nostalgic stop for the city's throngs of everyday working men and women. But today, she's got one of the hottest joints in town and is thrilled to welcome thousands of people who cross the ocean to see her show.

How do you envision robots integrating into your community over the next 5 years? Share your thoughts in the comments at the bottom of this meeting!

World of Rotary

The Rotary-USAID International H2O Collaboration

Since 2009, Rotary and USAID have partnered to improve access to clean water and sanitation in developing countries, working on continuous improvement while sharing learnings with other philanthropic and humanitarian organizations. In 2015, the collaboration committed $4 million each to Ghana, Uganda, and Madagascar, with each partner providing half of the funds needed. Rotary seeks to raise $200,000 for each country by 2018 as part of its $2 million per country commitment. The investment will support:WASH project design, implementation, monitoring, and evaluationLeadership and advocacy using Rotary members' expertise and resources to leverage WASH resources and initiativesInnovation of processes, tools, and partnerships in the WASH sector, such as the WASH Sustainability Index Tool, which determines the long-term technical and financial sustainability of WASH interventions.Read more about this partnership at Rotary.org.

Recent Event Recap:

The most unique mini golfing experience ever!

This past Sunday, members Monique and Mitty and guests John "Z" and Allen showed up to our November social at Urban Putt in San Francisco. The four spent the first hour catching up and chatting at the indoor bar at Urban Putt, snacking on delicious small bites and savoring some of the best beverages one can enjoy on a sunny Sunday afternoon in the city. And then the four tackled the mini golf course set, which was a mix of machines, contraptions, creativity, art, and technology. The four decided resoundingly that Urban Putt was one of the most unique mini golfing experiences they have had experienced, and hope that more club members and guests can join the next time we have an event there! Mini golf competition, anyone? :)

Here are a few select photos of the mini golfing experience, taken by Mitty:

Happy Dollars: Do Good by Sharing Something Good

Each week we ask our members to share stories with the club and toss in a few dollars to support our efforts. The primary goal of this section is to provide a fun way of getting to know each fellow members and guests, while giving back to a good cause.

Happy dollars is an opportunity to share something positive that has happened in your life whether it is personal or business. Think of it as your opportunity to brag a little, but also put a little bit into a karma jar. The money donated through happy dollars is put to charitable use, and the message that you leave for happy dollars will be posted in our online meeting the following week for the entire week for folks to see! (Pending that it's appropriate!)

Last week's happy dollar contributions went towards our club projects. Here are some of the happy dollar messages from last week:

Thank you to member Rory Olsen for his generous $15 donation to The Rotary Foundation's Polio Plus Fund. Rory had this to say:"All is well. Please give my gift to Polio Plus!"

Thank you to member Monique Ziesenhenne for her generous $10 donation! Monique had this to say:"Club General Fund!"

Thank you to member Brian Liddicoat for his generous $15 donation. Brian had this to say:"Learning orbital mechanics with my son playing Kerbal Space Program. If you have kids who like space and computer games (likely combo), this program is worth a look..."

Thank you to member Mahmood Khan for his generous $25 donation. Mahmood had this to say:"Rotary Club Events, Schools fund raisers, or simply help the food/thanks giving drive."

Thank you all for your donations last week!

Happy dollars is also a great opportunity to share with the group about something good that has happened to you, while giving back to a great cause. Next week's happy dollars will go back to powering our club's projects locally and globally.

So what are you happy about? Share with us below to help with doing good around the world.

Selected Six

Every week at the bottom of our meetings, there is a comments section for members and guests to tell us what they enjoyed about the meeting or to ask questions to the speaker. We select six comments every week from last week’s meeting to be featured during this week’s meeting.

Here are six comments selected from last week's meeting featuring the program on Min-e grantee Panel:

Screen-Shot-2016-09-05-at-12.20.05-PM.png

Member Ferheen Abbasi (Osaka, Japan) had this to say:"Thanks for the Min-E Grants presentation, Tzviatko, Heather, and Andrew!!! I hope one day I can apply to use it! :) Or, perhaps Nathan Gildart and I can team up and do something here in Japan!!!"

Screen-Shot-2017-09-05-at-10.52.13-AM.png

Member Raquel D. Juncal (Mexico) had this to say:"Loved the inspirational video! There is a major crossroad regarding the fundamental structure of medical education, mainly at a surgical level. Transitioning is not an easy task but the tools are already here, we might just start using them and approach towards proficiency-based education. Great job Tzviatko, Heather and Andrew! The Min-E Grants are an excellent initiative. Hope to see more projects in the coming months! :)"

Screen-Shot-2016-10-02-at-10.59.02-PM.png

Member Yvonne Kwan (California, USA) had this to say:"What an awesome inspirational video! That's an amazing application of technology and innovation in the OR. Great panel, Tzviatko, Heather, and Andrew! The Min-E Grants program is one of the many cool things about this club, and it was great to get a reminder of how to apply and to hear some testimonials as well."

Screen-Shot-2016-08-21-at-3.26.49-PM.png

Guest Dr. Carlos Gabuardi, Ph.D. had this to say:"When I was watching the video about the good work that Dr. José Luis Mosso Vázquez is doing I couldn’t avoid remembering that sentence of the poem “Desideratha” by Max Ehrmmann: “everywhere life is full of heroism”. To me this session is a reminder on how much can be done with so little where theres is the will and the commitment to lend a hand to others. Also, I want to highlight something mentioned by Heather when she said that the fact that the Rotary Club was involved in the grant to the school made it more “official”. That is very relevant because it addresses an issue of credibility that has been given to us by Rotary and the work of rotarians all over the world. Thank you to all of you, Andrew, Heather and Tzviatko for this inspiring session."

shags-shagrin.png

Member Shags Shagrin (California, USA) had this to say:"Another delightful meeting, good program, and time well spent learning new things!"

.

megan-breyer.png

Member Megan Breyer (California, USA) had this to say:"Thank you to Andrew and Heather for all the info :) I'm constantly amazed at how much this young club has to offer and how easy it is to get excited about what everyone is doing in service to their local and global communities. My head is swimming with ideas for the Min-e-Grants program!!. Also - big kudos to this club for posting and focusing on such positive events and breakthroughs around the world. I look forward to these meetings so much each week! Looking forward to meeting even more of you in Toronto 2018!"

Be sure to leave a comment at the end of this week’s meeting after you watch the program below, and perhaps you’ll see your comment featured next week!

Program: TheraBaby for Seniors with Dementia

Every week we bring to you a new program on innovation, education, technology, and humanitarian service. This week our program features guest Joseph "Joe" Choi, the Founder of TheraBaby, a doll that helps seniors with dementia.

joseph_choi.jpg

Joseph "Joe" Choi is a serial entrepeneur, engineer, and business owner. Joe graduated from the University of Hawaii with a Bachelor's of Science in Civil Engineering, and later graduated from Stanford University with a Masters of Science in Civil Engineering. Joe has worked for the FMC Corporate Technology Center and for Cisco as an IT Manager. Joe is currently the President & CEO of JWay Group and Principal of Neo Global Technologies. In 2012, Joe founded TheraBaby®.

The TheraBaby® doll was intended for use in doll therapy and person-centered care for seniors with dementia. The design for the TheraBaby® doll draws on published research studies, field studies, and the personal experiences with doll therapy of Founder and Director, Joe Choi, as well as those of many others.

In this week's program, Joe will share with us more about the mission of TheraBaby and how his team is helping seniors with dementia.

Members and guests, please join us in welcoming Joe Choi!

What did you think? Let's hear from you!

Share with us your thoughts in the comments at the bottom of this meeting page! If you have questions for Joe, feel free to ask in the comments!

You’re Almost Done! One last thing: The Attendance Survey...

Thanks for reading and watching this week’s meeting. You have two last things to do before you’re done. First, we have a very short attendance survey below for you to fill out to record your attendance.

Visiting Rotarians, this is how you can get an email receipt to pass along to your club’s secretary as proof that you’ve attended our meeting if you need it for makeups.

Non-Rotarian Guests, we would love to see who is dropping by our meetings! This part is optional for you. If you think you may want to join our eClub at some point in the future, we would strongly recommend you fill out the attendance form as it will improve your chances of success for your membership application.

More importantly, for all members and guests — we strongly recommend and ask that you leave a comment below in our comments area below. Tell us how you enjoyed the program. Ask this week’s speaker any questions you might have. Or just stop by and say hello and tell us where you’re from!
