Welcome to the Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley!

Here’s a message from President Tzviatko:

Greetings Rotarians and Guests,I hope you are all enjoying the summer (if you are in the northern hemisphere). I spent last weekend relaxing in the mountains of Zimbabwe. Building even more appreciation for the beauty of nature and the relaxing effect it has on our busy lives. This week we have a special program by our Charter President Rushton! Looking forward to seeing your comments and questions below.

Sincerely,

Tzviatko

President, Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley

Guests, we are happy to have you join us this week!

As we see it, our flexibility as an online, asynchronous club allows a special type of service to Rotarians around the world: we make it easier for anyone to strive for and maintain 100% attendance. That keeps you engaged with Rotary's events and ideas, and provides a moment of inspiration for devoting your creativity, talents, and resources to good causes. You are certainly not required to pay anything in order to attend our meetings. However, if you would like to make a small contribution to our service efforts, you are welcome to do so in our secure Happy Dollars section down the page. This could be what you normally pay at your own club's meetings for lunch, for example. Any amount is welcome, but first and foremost, we're happy you've joined us, and hope you will share with others who we are and what we do to help inspire Service Above Self. And don't forget to fill out our attendance form so you get an email you can pass on to your club's secretary!

Weekly Funny with the Lady of Laughter (LOL)

We believe laughter is an important part of life, and we should all make time to laugh a little. This segment of our meeting is meant to tickle you just enough. These funnies are curated by member Yvonne Kwan, our “Lady of Laughter!”

This week, we're going prehistoric with our jokes. But don't worry; they're still dino-mite!

What does a triceratops sit on?Its tricera-bottom!

Why was the stegosaurus such a good volleyball player? He could really spike the ball!

Why can't you hear a pterodactyl go to the restroom? Because the "p" is silent!

Weekly Inspiration

Every week we start our meetings with a short video highlighting innovation, inspiration, entrepreneurship, or social change.

The indigenous people who live along the Amazon River in Brazil have a word for the tidal bore that rushes in from the Atlantic Ocean. They call the wave Pororoca, which translates to “big roar.” You can actually hear it coming. That’s how loud and powerful it is. It’s risky to surf the Pororoca because it is full of debris as well as snakes and piranha. But surfer Serginho Laus has mastered what is one of the longest waves in the world.

Through a Rotarian's Lens

Sometimes a photo can capture an amazing moment. In this section Member Keith Marsh shares his incredible photography! If you'd like to submit a photo for this section please contact Keith.

A favorite location for photographers is the Palouse area in Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho where I grew up. It is known for its rolling hills of wheat, barley and lentils along with many old barns. On one trip, we rented a small plane with the door removed so we could get a clear view. I attached a GoPro camera to the wing strut to get this shot and was able to operate it with an app on my iPad. We were well strapped to our seats.

Learn Something New

This section is curated by members Shags Shagrin and Rushton Hurley and aims to teach our members and guests something new, fun and useful! If you have any ideas on a fun trick or skill you'd like to share please contact Rushton or Shags.

Outside of the state of Texas, Cincinnati, Ohio, is the most chili-crazed city in the United States. Cincinnati prides itself on being a true chili capital, with more than 180 chili parlors. Cincinnati-style chili is quite different from its more familiar Texas cousin, and it has developed a cult-like popularity. What makes it different is the way the meat is cooked. The chili has a thinner consistency and is prepared with an unusual blend of spices that includes cinnamon, chocolate or cocoa, allspice, and Worcestershire sauce. This is truly the unofficial grub of Cincinnati. The people of Cincinnati enjoy their chili spooned over freshly made pasta and topped with a combination of chopped onions, shredded Cheddar cheese, refried beans or kidney beans, and crushed oyster crackers. If you choose "the works," you are eating what they call Five-Way Chili. Make sure to pile on the toppings - that's what sets it apart from any other chili dish.Cincinnati chili lovers order their chili by number. Two, Three, Four, or Five Way, let you and your guests create their own final product.Two-Way Chili: Chili served on spaghettiThree-Way Chili: Additionally topped with shredded Cheddar cheeseFour-Way Chili: Additionally topped with chopped onionsFive-Way Chili: Additionally topped with kidney beansIngredients:* 1 quart cold water* 2 lbs ground beef, or ground turkey, or shredded/ground jackfruit* 2 cups crushed tomato* 2 yellow onions, diced* 4 garlic cloves, minced* 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce (or a vegan version if you don’t eat anchovies)* 1.5 tbsp unsweetened cocoa* 1/4 cup chili powder* 1 tsp cayenne* 1 tsp ground cumin* 2 tbsp cider vinegar* 1 whole bay leaf* 1/4 tsp ground cloves* 1 tsp cinnamon* 1 1/2 tsp salt* 1 teaspoon ground allspice* 1/2 teaspoon red (cayenne) pepper1 (16-ounce) package uncooked dried spaghetti pastaToppings (see below)Directions:In a large frying pan over medium-high heat, saute onion, ground beef, garlic, and chili powder until ground beef is slightly cooked. Coffee With a Rotarian

A natural part of Rotary is the networking and the fellowship you get out of meeting other Rotarians. Coffee With a Rotarian is a monthly program of our club where we match participating club members for one-on-one virtual (or in some cases in person) coffee meetings, so they can learn more about each other. This program is organized by member Tzviatko Chiderov.

This week we have Mark from Perth, Western Australia reporting on a chat with Rory from Houston, TX, USA.Rory (and Jazzmin Rory's lovable cat) and I had a great CWR catch up. My second one and both have been great value. I could easily see myself and Rory talking for hours and the 40 minutes we had did not seem long enough.I learnt quite a bit about Rory's job as a judge, his cats (a special mention to Boo Boo on that one), insights into Obamacare and his love of reading.Rory mentioned he was currently reading about Behavioral Economics. At my work and in my space we have people working in this area which really interests me. So we could have talked about this for hours. From my end hopefully Rory learnt a bit more about my work and my life on my 5 acre farm.To finish we talked about what brought us together - Rotary, and how we both see the huge potential within our club.Rory it was great catching up with you and look forward to meeting in person one day.

We encourage all club members to participate in Coffee With a Rotarian. You can sign up here!

Happy Dollars: Do Good by Sharing Something Good

Each week we ask our members to share stories with the club and toss in a few dollars to support our efforts. The primary goal of this section is to provide a fun way of getting to know each fellow members and guests, while giving back to a good cause.

Happy dollars is an opportunity to share something positive that has happened in your life whether it is personal or business. Think of it as your opportunity to brag a little, but also put a little bit into a karma jar. The money donated through happy dollars is put to charitable use, and the message that you leave for happy dollars will be posted in our online meeting the following week for the entire week for folks to see! (Pending that it’s appropriate!)Here are the happy dollars contributions from last week! This section is usually updated on the early hours of Saturday, so contributions made over the weekend may not be listed here.Rory Olsen made a $20 donation. After seeing and hearing the program on the Rotary Foundation, I need to say that my gift should be applied to Polio Plus.Brian Liddicoat made a $15 donation.Last week before school starts: it's been a good summer.

Selected Comments

Every week at the bottom of our meetings, there is a comments section for members and guests to tell us what they enjoyed about the meeting or to ask questions to the speaker. We select a few comments every week from last week’s meeting to be featured during this week’s meeting.

Here are the comments selected from last week’s meeting.

Mitty Chang said:

Thanks everyone for the well wishes last week! Yvonne and I just moved to a new apartment this past week, so life has been a little bit hectic and we haven't had the chance to reply back to everyone. We are feeling well loved by our Rotary family, so thank you everyone!

Keith - Very cool photo this week! Love your work.

Sam - Thanks for taking the time to speak to our eClub! Always good to hear from you.

Tanya Martin said:

For women in the States, having supplies for their cycle is not a big deal, but in poor societies, it can make a difference between having a completely miserable cycle vs. a tolerable cycle. Good work.

Nick LaGarde said:

I loved both the message about trust and the message about time from Sam. Trust is earned however we can use our membership as a way to meet people we can trust. Thanks for the presentation!

Be sure to leave a comment at the end of this week’s meeting after you watch the program below, and perhaps you’ll see your comment featured next week!

Program: Traveling and a Service Mindset

Speaker: Rushton Hurley

Every week we bring to you a new program on innovation, entrepreneurship, and education, and how those contribute to service to others. Special thanks to member Roger Plested for leading our club's Programs Committee in finding us amazing speakers each week.

If you have an idea for a cool speaker, please feel free to reach out to them directlyor submit THIS FORM so our Program Committee can contact them!

What does traveling do for how we think of service? In this talk, Rushton will share perspectives he has explored as part of his work on recent trips to Japan, the Philippines, the United Arab Emirates, and other places.Rushton Hurley is an educator and social benefit entrepreneur who has been a Rotarian since joining the San Antonio (Texas) Downtown Club in April of 2004. Beginning in January of 2015, Rushton served as the charter president of the Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley. As he puts it, the club is an effort to explore how technology can serve the business of service. After moving from Texas to California in 2005, Rushton joined the Rotary Club of Santa Clara, and when his work schedule changed, he transferred to the Rotary eClub of the Southwest USA, serving as its president in 2013-2014 before leading the team that began the Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley. Rushton has more than fifteen years of perfect Rotary attendance, and loves the chance to be inspired every week.

Share your thoughts or ask our speaker a question in the comments at the bottom of this meeting page!
