Message from our President

Greetings Members and Friends of Rotary e-Club of Silicon Valley. As President of our Club, I want to welcome you all today.

WEEKLY FUNNY WITH SHAGS

We believe laughter is an important part of life, and we should all make time to laugh a little. This segment of our meeting is meant to tickle you just enough. These funnies are curated by member Steven "Shags" Shagrin!

Surprise Gift

A travel agent looked up from his desk to see an older lady and an older gentleman peering in the shop window at the posters showing glamorous destinations around the world. The agent had had a good week and the dejected couple looking in the window gave him a feeling of generosity.

He called them into his shop and said, "I have a surprise for you. I am sending you off to a fabulous resort at my expense, and I won't take no for an answer."

He took them inside and asked his secretary to write two flight tickets and book a room in a five star hotel. They, as can be expected, gladly accepted, and were on their way. About a month later the little lady came into his shop. "And how did you like your holiday?" he asked eagerly.

"The flight was exciting and the room was lovely", she said. "I've come to thank you. But, one thing puzzled me. Who was that old guy I had to share the room with?"

Well, I hate to break it to you, but the resemblance doesn't end there!

INSPIRATION

Every week we share a short video highlighting innovation, education, entrepreneurship, or whatever we think might inspire you to see the world in new ways.

You might show up ready to go when you are in a game or are preparing for an interview. When it's more everyday encounters, though, how do you show up? This message from Ryan Estis explores that idea.

Happy dollars is an opportunity to share something positive that has happened in your life whether it is personal or business. Think of it as your opportunity to brag a little, but also put a little bit into a karma jar. The money donated through happy dollars is put to charitable use.

PROGRAM: How Photography Can Be an Access to Social-Emotional Learning

SPEAKER: JP Pullos

Every week we bring to you a new program on innovation, entrepreneurship, and education, and how those contribute to service to others.

The Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley seeks to explore perspectives on service from across the world. The views of the speakers in our programs are their own, and unless stated otherwise, are not necessarily reflective of the views of our eClub or Rotary International.

If you have an idea for a cool speaker, please feel free to reach out to them directly or submit THIS FORM so our Program Committee can contact them!

Today's speaker, JP Pullos, will describe the curriculum he helped to create that is being used by hundreds of teachers around the world. Students participating in 100cameras programs will often think they're simply going to learn about photography basics. What they walk away with is so much more: each student discovers that photography can be a powerful medium for communicating feelings and emotions. Each student experiences being the author of their own stories and the creative voice behind how those stories are shared with the world.

JP Pullos is the Director of Programs at 100cameras. With a background in photography and arts education, he started volunteering with 100cameras in 2012. He has taught photography, storytelling, and social-emotional learning to young refugees in Baltimore, to teenagers impacted by gun violence in Chicago, to students in an under-resourced fishing village in Colombia, and to children recovering from trauma inflicted by ISIS in Iraq, among many others. His job now is to teach educators how to teach the 100cameras program to young people in their own communities.

Members and guests, please welcome JP Pullos!
