Welcome to the Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley!

Message from President Mitty

A Vietnam theme.

Welcome to the Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley's meeting for this week! My name is Mitty and I am president of this amazing Rotary club! Every week we bring to you curated content to inspire you, to intrigue you, to educate you, and to empower you to do more. We are proud to be one of the premier online Rotary clubs in the world, with weekly online meetings and in-person events in the Silicon Valley. This week we are welcoming two new amazing individuals to our Rotary eClub family, Rory Olsen and Nicole Pham! Congratulations to both Rory and Nicole for having met our membership requirements and for being approved by both our board of directors and our club membership. Rory and Nicole, you are both now part of an international family of like-minded leaders working to improve this world through humanitarian service. Members and guests, please continue on the meeting and listen to their stories, and then join me in giving them a warm welcome in the comments section!I am also excited that our guest speaker this week is our newest member, Nicole Pham! When we first scheduled her program recording weeks ago, I didn't know she was going to be inducted into our club the same week as her program. It is great to see new members diving into the club from the get go, and it's even more exciting to see how much our small club has been growing since this Rotary year began on July 1st.We are going to continue improving this club, and we are going to continue doing great things!I also want to especially thank every everyone who donated to the happy dollars last week. We raised over $170 for the Interact Vietnam Soccer Ball Project! Those indestructible soccer balls will be delivered to Vietnam to children who need them. You are all amazing, and I am so happy to be part of Rotary with all of you!I hope you all enjoy this week's program. I found the weekly inspiration video to be fascinating when I was looking for the right piece to curate this week. And of course, the member spotlight + the new member videos are wonderful shares. I hope you also all enjoy how the jokes and the photo are themed to our program this week! And for our Guests: So incredibly excited to have you join us! Whether you are a visiting Rotarian, prospective member, friend of a friend, or just someone stopping by -- our goal is to make sure you're getting some inspiration out of this meeting. As you continue scrolling and reading through our meeting, please leave a comment at the bottom of the meeting once you're done. We would love to hear from you! You can tell us things like where you're from and what you thought of the meeting! You can also ask the speaker a question in the comments section.

Yours in service,

Mitty Chang,

President

Power of Images: Deepwater Solo Climbing in Vietnam

We believe in that saying a photo is worth a thousand words. Great images can inspire people and can conjure a wide range of emotions.

This week we feature a photo from by photographer Lukasz Warzecha with National Geographic.

About this photo featured in National Geographic:

“What makes it dangerous is, if you get your splashdown into the water wrong, even into deep water, it can feel like hitting concrete,” says photographer Lukasz Warzecha, who took this image of deepwater solo climber Neil Gresham hanging precariously off a limestone stalactite high above Hạ Long Bay, Vietnam.

“In most places, shooting climbers is usually easy enough. You fix a rope from the top of the cliff and then hang in the relative safety of your harness. On this shoot, we had rope but no way to secure it in the right place. After following Neil, I found myself wedged between the wall and some stalactites on a tiny ledge, with the water below as my only protection. I took a deep breath and unwrapped my camera from the dry bag,” Warzecha says. “One false move and it would have all been over.”

Gresham, who is equally at home on rock or ice, spent days looking for new spots to climb in Vietnam, which he calls a deepwater soloing paradise. Hạ Long Bay boasts more than 3,000 limestone islands primed for deepwater climbing, which uses no ropes for ascending rock—just the climber's wits, specialized shoes, and gymnastics chalk to dry sweaty hands.

“It's unusual to spend an entire climbing trip on a boat—but then it's also unusual to do over 40 new routes without using a rope. I feel we hardly scratched the surface on our trip exploring new routes,” Gresham says.

The beauty of deepwater soloing is that climbers don’t have to spend an inordinate amount of time fixing ropes with drills, which frees up time for climbing, Gresham says. For climbers who want to get their feet wet in Vietnam, he suggests “taking plenty of pairs of rock shoes and chalk if you go to Hạ Long Bay. And watch out for pirates—there are more of them in this part of the South China Sea than in any other of the world's oceans.”

This photo leaves one just speechless. Amazing view.

Laughing Out Loud with our Lady of LOLs

We believe that laughing a little every day keeps you healthier. Eveolry week we try to share with you something that will make you smile! This section is curated by Rotarian Yvonne Kwan, our club's “Lady of LOLs.”

Hey! This is Yvonne, your Lady of LOLs. This week's funnies are inspired by Nicole's program on the free medical work in Vietnam! Doctors are awesome!

Doctor: Nurse, how is that little boy doing, the one who swallowed ten quarters?

Nurse: No change yet.

Does an apple a day keep the doctor away?

Yes, but only if you aim it well enough.

Weekly Inspiration: China is the Future of the Internet

Every week we bring you videos of innovation, inspiration, and entrepreneurship. This week we are featuring a video from The New York Times on how China has become the future of the internet.

https://youtu.be/VAesMQ6VtK8?t=4s

Super Apps that can do just about anything, and the amount of information that they collect. Wow. Imagine all of the possibilities, and where our apps will go in just the next 5 years alone. It's interesting to see the Silicon Valley looking to China for inspiration on innovation in mobile apps. What do you think is next?

Member Spotlight: Andrew Taw

This week we feature a short introduction from one of our members and club secretary, Andrew Taw. Andrew is a Program Coordinator for Upward Bound in the San Francisco bay area. Today he is going to share with us one of his recent labors of love!

https://youtu.be/AQBJuW6IV1A

Super cool Andrew! Thanks for sharing!

New Members Introduction: Rory & Nicole

Our club is a family of like-minded individuals who believe in service above self, and love bettering our local and our international communities through humanitarian service. We also just have a really cool bunch of people! This segment is dedicated to our newest members and meeting them. This week we are welcoming two new members: Rory Olsen and Nicole Pham!

Members and guests. President Mitty here. This week it is my distinct honor to welcome both Rory Olsen and Nicole Pham as the newest members of our Rotary Club family! They were each officially admitted into our club on August 8, 2016! We have some short introduction videos from both Rory and Nicole below.

First, let's Meet Rory.

https://youtu.be/s49XrQked8w

From Judge Rory Olsen:

"I was born almost sixty seven years ago in a log cabin on the shore of Lake Michigan. (Okay, it was in a hospital.) I have been married to the same woman for almost forty four years and have a daughter, two grandchildren and one more on the way. I also have two cats who rule the roost.

As a graduate of the Duke University School of Law, I am a probate judge in Houston, Texas. Before going on the county’s payroll, I practiced tax and probate law for two decades.

I was a member of the Sharpstown Rotary Club in Houston for over thirty years. I joined this club because I am fascinated by the possibility of both eclubs and eprojects. My special interest in Rotary is in the field of literacy."

Meet Nicole.

*DISCLAIMER: Video is low quality but content is high quality! Sorry!"https://youtu.be/8NPHz2bd8hAFrom Nicole,

"Hey Rotary eClub! I'm SO excited to be a Rotarian! I'm not going to give you my bio in this section again because I know it'll be in the program introduction this week. I just wanted to say that I am looking forward to meeting the rest of you and being an active member of this club!"

Rory and Nicole --Welcome to the Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley! Members and guests, please join me in giving both Rory and Nicole a warm welcome!

World of Rotary: Facebook Live with Rotary International President John Germ & VP Jennifer Jones

The world of Rotary is vast -- spanning over 180 countries in the world with over 1.2 million members. Our club is only one of thousands of Rotary clubs, each one that meets in a different place and at a different time. This segment of our meeting brings to you a little bit about what is going on in the world of Rotary this week.

This week our World of Rotary segment features a recent Facebook Live video recording that Rotary International President John Germ and Rotary International Vice President Jennifer Jones held on August 11, 2016. Check it out!

Note: It's a pretty long video. I would just recommend watching just a few minutes to get a taste of how it ran. Only watch the entire video below in its entirety if you're a super diehard Rotarian... :)

Happy Dollars

Each week we ask our members to share news with the club and toss in a few dollars to support our efforts. The primary goal for this section is to provide a fun way of getting to know each other, while giving back to a good cause.

soccerball4

Last week we decided to donate all of the money collected from happy dollars directly to the Interact Vietnam Soccer Ball Project!

We are excited to announce that we raised over $170! Special thanks to the following members and guests for making this contribution to a great cause possible!

From member Rory Olsen ($15):

From member Yvonne Kwan ($15):

"Go Interact District 5170!"

From member Kristi Govertsen ($5):

"Some happy dollars as a thank you to Paul Kingsman for being our speaker this week. I appreciate our continued friendship, and it is always delightful connect with Paul in various ways via Rotary."

From guest Ken Oku ($20):

"I absolutely must donate to this project. All my work in Iraq and central Africa - has let me see how much kids want soccer balls. How one ball can make a big difference, and why wouldn't we want the rotary logo on it?"

From member Tzviatko Chiderov ($20):

"Indestructible soccer balls!"

From member Brian Liddicoat ($15):

"About to head off for scenic Medford, Oregon in my (rented) Cessna 172 for a deposition. It's going to be a great Sunday for flying..."

From guest Joseph Tomaino ($20):

"I just “attended” one of your meetings and your guest speaker Paul Kingsman was very topic to my professional life as a Principal in an accounting and consulting firm (however I want it to be noted that I am not an accountant!). His message is timely as we are evaluating our mid-year goal performance this week. I really enjoyed being able to attend meeting remotely -- you have developed an excellent platform and concept...keep it up! I am giving $20 in happy dollars that I otherwise would have spent for lunch had I made my club’s meeting last week. As I read on your site, I am sure it will go to good use."

From member Rushton Hurley ($20):

"Cool effort - glad to join in!"

From member Linda Tangren ($20):

From member Mitty Chang ($10):

"For indestructible soccer balls! LOVE this project!! And also an overdue shoutout to our new members Kristi and Raquel!"

From member Mahmood Khan ($15):

"Soccer balls to children in Vietnam"

We were able to get a quick thank you video from the Interact Vietnam Soccer Ball Project organizers. Here are Interactors Austin Wangyu and Michelle Hua..

https://youtu.be/xfBhL8F9jmUThanks so much everyone!

Just joining us this week? Still curious about the Interact Vietnam Soccer Ball Project? Read more about the Interact Vietnam Soccer Ball Project below.

This week the happy dollars will go towards funding our club projects and initiatives. So go ahead, tell us about something good that's happen to you this week! Think of this like a digital karma jar. All happy dollar submissions will be featured in next week's online meeting -- so great for shoutouts and brags!

Visiting Rotarians: If you like what you see, this is a really good chance for you to give a digital shoutout to your club in our next week's meeting, while helping fund some of our projects. Perhaps consider donating an amount similar to what you might have paid for the cost of the meal if you attended a brick and mortar club meeting -- or any amount you are comfortable with![wufoo username="mightymitty" formhash="z1axxwbk1v5i25o" autoresize="true" height="598" header="show" ssl="true"]

Selected Six

Every week at the bottom of our meetings, there is a comments section for members and guests to tell us what they enjoyed about the meeting or to ask questions to the speaker. We select six comments every week from last week's meeting to be featured during this week's meeting.

Here are six comments selected from last week's meeting on being Distraction-Free Proof with Paul Kingsman:

Screen Shot 2016-08-14 at 10.37.18 PM

From member Yvonne Kwan (California, USA):

"Paul, thank you so much for your insightful and inspirational words!! This is truly a program that hit close to home. There are so many ways to become distracted in today's technology-driven world; we often get caught up in trying to get our feet wet in everything rather than mastering a few things. Thank you for the reminder to keep ourselves distraction-free and the benefits that can provide. FLAMMABLE SWORD?! HOLY COW. Super cool new perspective of science. Shags, always great to hear from you! It seems like I learn something new about you every time we see you. I can't wait to see your green garlic video! Thanks Marco, Victoria, and Annie for making a video and introducing yourselves! We'll definitely see you guys in the future. Kudos to Stephen and Kenny for going out to our July service event!"

kristigovertsen

From member Kristi Govertsen (Montana, USA):

"Paul, thank you for doing this program for us! What a perfect time to hear your story, and consider what the athletes in Rio must be going through. I also appreciate your message of distraction-free productivity-- it was the perfect message for me to hear this week. You're awesome!"

chriscochrane

From member Chris Cochrane (Ontario, Canada):

"Paul, cool presentation. Shags ... ever thought of marketing yourself, online, as the Singing Chef? Corina Parachiv (a friend and now a guest to pour meetings from Montreal ) ...so glad you took time to check out our club. Keep visiting, please."

johnloranzo

From member John Lozano (California, USA):

"Paul, thanks for a great presentation. As the school year starts, I find my teaching life is full of distraction so your advice will definitely help. I appreciate the comments regarding simple vs. easy....something I can relate too. Great program this week!"

richardknaggs

From member Richard Knaggs (South Africa):

"How Crazy is that high dive. Thanks Paul. It must be amazing to have won an Olympic medal. I will endeavour to not be distracted and achieve my goals."

brianliddicoat

From member Brian Liddicoat (California, USA):

"What a great talk! I'm saving this on Youtube for my "Inspirational Playlist". Just goes to prove, ain't going nowhere without a great Mum.

Thank you everyone for attending last week's meeting!

Be sure to leave a comment at the end of this week's meeting after you watch the program below, and perhaps you'll see your comment featured next week!

The Program

Every week we bring to you a program on innovation, education, entrepreneurship, and humanitarian service. This week we are featuring a program on delivering free medical assistance in Vietnam, with our guest speaker Nicole Pham.

Nicole Pham is currently a clinical research coordinator at Bay Area Retina Associates. She also interns at the University of California, San Francisco, studying autism. In her free time, she dedicates it to her favorite organization → ROTARY! Nicole is serving her second term as Interact District 5170 Advisor and Big West Rotaract Alumni Coordinator. Nicole’s biggest passions in life are health care, service, and traveling. Her life goal is to become a physician in underserved communities and countries, while serving as a Rotarian. Besides Rotary, another organization that Nicole wholly dedicates herself to is the Project Vietnam Foundation (PVNF). PVNF hosts yearly medical missions in rural regions of Vietnam in which Nicole has attended and loved every minute of! About the Project Vietnam Foundation (PVNF):Project Vietnam Foundation is a not-for-profit organization that provides care for the underserved communities of Vietnam. Project Vietnam has worked at 24 sites in Vietnam and trained over 43 provinces. In 1996, Project Vietnam began serving the Vietnamese community through yearly organized mission trips in rural regions during the spring and summer. During these missions, PVNF provides surgical corrections for children born with cleft lips and eye defects, medical exams and treatments for all ages, and training to local health personnel.PVNF’s long term goal is to assist in the crucial development of newborns and pediatric emergency services. PVNF promotes sustainable standards for Infection control in order to reduce pediatric mortality rates.A major success of PVNF was a 3-year effort to identify Vitamin K deficiency as a major cause of newborn death. Now, Vietnam has adopted a national policy requiring a Vitamin K injection after birth. In addition to being our speaker for this week, Nicole also happens to be one of our newest club members! Members and guests, let's give Nicole a warm welcome!

https://youtu.be/GQlkqbjf2CcFrom Nicole:

"As an attendee of Project Vietnam’s Summer Service Camp. I am able to join 60 other students and about 30 health professionals in providing various areas of care for 2 weeks. In these 2 weeks, we are trained in primary care, pediatrics, optometry, pharmacy, ob/gyn, etc. During this time, it is not unusual to spend 8-10 hours in the sweltering heat. Despite the humidity and lack of sleep, the love and kindness of the people are overwhelming. Their thankfulness is what drives us all to push ourselves to see every last patient. In this time together, we became family with one another as we brought vital healthcare to our brothers and sisters from overseas."
