Message from our President

Greetings Members and Friends of Rotary e-Club of Silicon Valley. As President of our Club, I want to welcome you all today.

WEEKLY FUNNY WITH SHAGS

We believe laughter is an important part of life, and we should all make time to laugh a little. This segment of our meeting is meant to tickle you just enough. These funnies are curated by member Steven "Shags" Shagrin!

Can You See Me Now?

An Englishman, a Frenchman, a Spaniard, and a German man are watching a street performer. While he’s juggling, the street performer notices that the four have a bad view, so he stands on a crate and asks them, “Can you all see me now?”

The four guys respond to him, “Yes...”

“Oui...”

“Si...”

“Ja!”

INSPIRATION

Every week we share a short video highlighting innovation, education, entrepreneurship, or whatever we think might inspire you to see the world in new ways.

When you take a walk, how far do you go? This guy named Tom probably has you beat. You might focus on how his reason for walking seems to evolve over time.

LEARN SOMETHING NEW

The Nicholas Brothers and Dorothy Dandridge

My father made sure that I saw these two fellows dance and sing when I was a kid watching movies on weekends. Later in life, I researched their fascinating story. The full clip of this video is available at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V2aj0zhXlLA and features a young Milton Berle as "Mitch". He's fun to watch in the full 8-minute bit. This is the second part of that film segment featuring the amazing Nicholas Brothers and their common love interest. She married the younger brother but got burned by his cheating. And it's no wonder they both had hip issues later in life!

  • Club Service Club Service is one of Rotary’s Avenues of Service.

The role of the Club Service is to perform the logistical tasks that help create a great club experience for both current and new members. Clubs need active, engaged members to provide service to their communities and attract new members.

President Elect Mike needs your help!

Are you willing to be on a Club Committee to help the club fulfill its mission of Service Above Self! We have immediate needs for help on club committees. We are happy to communicate with you 1:1 to give you more information about the roles and responsibilities of these committees and talk about how you can help us get ready for a “magical” Rotary year.

Remember, being a Rotarian means more than just being a member, being a Rotarian means you are willing to do Rotary work. Please volunteer! If interested in working on a club committee (Membership, Club Service, Programs, Foundation, Youth Service, Mini-Grants, Budget & Finance) please let President Nick or President-Elect Mike know ASAP!

  • TRF & Every Rotarian, Every Year (EREY)

It’s not too late. Have you received and returned your 2024-2025 TRF Pledge Card that was sent via email by TRF Chair Phil?

The winning clubs will earn extra DDF funds to help us in our efforts to make a better world. Remember, our DDF comes back to us through your TRF giving. • TRF and EREY - There’s still time to consider your gift to Rotary for the annual TRF Fund. There are several ways to give: outright payment (Check or Credit Card), monthly payments billed to your credit card, allocation to several funds, etc. Our TRF Chair, Phil Dean has already sent by email your pledge and methods for collecting. Have you returned your pledge? Our Club is striving to be designated as “Every Year, Every Rotarian”. Your gift matters, either a small amount or a large amount (that is up to you - we will never tell you how much to give). A portion of our Annual fundgiving will come back to us for our DDF usage.

HAPPY DOLLARS: Do Good by Sharing Something Good

Each week we ask our members to share stories with the club and toss in a few dollars to support our efforts. The primary goal of this section is to provide a fun way of getting to know each fellow members and guests, while giving back to a good cause.

Happy dollars is an opportunity to share something positive that has happened in your life whether it is personal or business. Think of it as your opportunity to brag a little, but also put a little bit into a karma jar. The money donated through happy dollars is put to charitable use.

PROGRAM: Music, Teamwork, and Excellence

SPEAKER: Mike Vandemark

Every week we bring you a new program on innovation, entrepreneurship, and education, and how those contribute to service to others.

The Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley seeks to explore perspectives on service from across the world. The views of the speakers in our programs are their own, and unless stated otherwise, are not necessarily reflective of the views of our eClub or Rotary International.

If you have an idea for a cool speaker, please feel free to reach out to them directly or submit THIS FORM so our Program Committee can contact them!

This week's guest, Mike Vandemark, leads an amazingly talented community of musicians called the Lexington Lab Band. In this conversation with the Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley, we will hear how teamwork and humility allow these musicians to achieve a level of excellence that brings honor to those whose songs they cover, and joy to those who love the music. The lesson for service clubs is a powerful one.

A musician and producer based in Lexington, Kentucky, Mike Vandemark has been collaborating with musicians and leading artistic endeavors for nearly three decades. The son of two music educators, his passion for team collaboration through the arts was developed at a young age and is on display through his role as a programming director for the second largest church in Kentucky and his leadership of the internationally acclaimed YouTube project the Lexington Lab Band. Under his guidance LLB has amassed over 100 Million Views on social media networks and has been a platform for over 85 local musicians to gather and celebrate the music that inspired them. When he’s not working or performing you can find him enjoying time with his wife of 25 years, Leann, and their kids Charlie and Anna or on a local Disc Golf course.

Members and guests, please welcome Mike Vandemark!
